Nordic skiers begin new winter season

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — December 22 marks the first event of the winter season for the Catskill Nordic Ski Club. Members will gather at the Haven Road trail for a tow path hike and trail clearing. Pat and Dan Gersten will coordinate the day’s activities. Call 845/798-6618.

The club offers guided cross-country ski trips on various Sullivan County trails. Most trips are free, except where noted, and last about two hours. Unless otherwise indicated, all ski trips begin at 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday. Depending on the weather and/or snow conditions, the leader may choose to reschedule to Sunday, or change the hour, or location, or to hold a winter hike. Members and new skiers should always call the leader the night before for updated information.

On December 29, trail clearing and trail marking continue in the Town of Thompson Park with leaders Betty and Bob Klein, 845/796-3336.

The rest of the 2013 schedule is as follows: January 5 on the Fallsburg trails, with leaders Eileen and Andy Kalter, 845/434-5371; January 12 on the Downs Road trails, with leaders Warren and Judy Bergstrom, 845/794-7631; January 19 at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Ferndale, with leader Pat Gersten, 845/794-1039; January 26 at Mongaup Pond with leader Judy Brennan, 845/292-7632; February 2 at the Smallwood trails with leaders Jonathan Hyman and Gail Rubenfeld, 845/583-4103; February 9 at the Frost Valley YMCA (fee charged) with leader Bonnie Hoffman, 845/794-7552; February 16 at Minnewaska State Park (fee charged) with leader Dan Gersten, 845/798-6618; February 23 at the Town of Thompson Park with leader Christine Westerman, 845/791-7332; March 2 at Fluggertown Road with leader Kathi Widmann, 845/794-5650; March 9 for a ski or hike with annual meeting and dinner to follow.
