Edward J. Herrmann, Sr. of Narrowsburg, NY, a longtime resident of the area, and retired Deputy Sheriff for Sullivan County, passed away on October 25, 2016, at the age of 85, at his daughter’s home, surrounded by family.

The son of the late Eugene and Amelia Hammer Herrmann, he was born December 31, 1930 in Queens, NY.

Edward was an Air Force Veteran serving in Alaska during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Tusten Highland Post #1363 in Eldred, NY; a member of Sullivan County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association; a member of the Moose Lodge in Surfside Beach, SC; and a founding member of the Tri County Sportsman Club.

He was a man of great faith, being devoutly active in several parish churches in the cities he lived during his life. He was both a member and usher at St. Francis Xavier Church, Narrowsburg, NY; a member and usher at St. Mary’s Church, Waymart, PA; a member, usher and adorer at the Adoration Chapel, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Murrells Inlet, SC; and a member at St. Ann’s Church, Shohola, PA.

A family statement reads: “Edward and his family were first known in the community as proprietors of the Lava House resort, situated in Narrowsburg, NY, in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. For many years he also enjoyed being a seasonal camper at Keen Lake Campgrounds in Waymart, PA. Later in life he had a residence in Surfside Beach, SC where he enjoyed living near the ocean. He will always be remembered for his love and dedication to his family. He loved fishing, boating, canasta, crossword puzzles and organizing events to celebrate with family and friends. He was a wonderful chef and always eager to share recipes and cooking tips. All will remember him as punctual, organized, and regimented in a wonderful way, and always telling stories of his fascinating life adventures. His life of giving and caring for others and his positive outlook on life right up to the day of his passing will be an inspiration to all who knew him. His life was a true testament to his Christian belief. His legacy lives on in all who knew him, as he truly made a difference in those he left behind.”

He is survived by his wife Mary of Honesdale, PA; his son Edward J. Herrmann Jr. and his wife Cyd of Barryville, NY; his daughter Karen DeSantis and her husband Anthony of Honesdale, PA; sister Dorothy Maher of Florida, two brothers, Joseph Herrmann and his wife Josephine of Florida, and George Herrmann and his wife Helene of Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Alice Herrmann and Jean Ann Herrmann; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several adored nieces, nephews and cousins.

Edward is predeceased by his son David Herrmann and two brothers, Vincent Herrmann and Eugene Herrmann.

Funeral services were held at Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg, NY. A mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Francis Xavier Church, Narrowsburg NY, with Father Dennis Dinan officiating. His final resting place is at the St. Francis Cemetery.
