John F. Vogt of Eldred, NY, retired owner of Vogt’s General Store in Shohola, PA and lifelong resident of the area, passed away at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris, NY on Friday, April 8, 2011. He was 91.

The son of the late Fritz and Alma Englehart Vogt, he was born in Shohola on October 5, 1919.

John served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion, a certified flight instructor; a member and past president of Meadow Brook Fly Club; a member of Civil Air Patrol, Pike Co, PA; a member, past chief and president of Shohola Fire Dept.; a member, past president and vice president of Highland Field and Stream; a member and past president of Beaver Brook Rod and Gun Club; and a member, past president and secretary of Sullivan Co. Federation of Sports. John was Sportsman of the Year in 1984, Federation of Sportsman. He was a member and past secretary of Highland Water Fowlers.

A family statement reads, in part: “John was a loving husband, father and grandfather, involved in so many things and dedicating so much of himself. He was a big part of our family and will greatly be missed.”

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Janith Boyd Vogt, son John D. Vogt of Eldred; grandson John Thomas Vogt of Eldred; sister Rosa Hupka of Alabama; and several nieces and nephews.

John is predeceased by his daughter-in-law Barbara Vogt.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 12 at the Harrison-Rasmussen Funeral Home, Barryville, NY, with Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst officiating. Cremation followed at Maple Hill Crematory, Archbald, PA.
