Thomas E. Mitchell, of Liberty, NY passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. He was 58.

The son of the late Clifford and Nancy O’Connor Mitchell, he was born on April 24, 1952.

Tom was a former director and drug counselor at Daytop Village in Swan Lake, NY. He was also a member of St. Peter’s Church in Liberty. Tommy was a mentor and a leader. He was a strong community volunteer whose work can be seen throughout many communities in connection with Sullivan Renaissance. He is most remembered in the Town of Bethel, where he helped to create Bethel Community Park and the Bethel Farmers Market. The gardens will always bloom thanks to Tom’s support and dedication.

Tom was also a loving brother and was devoted to his nieces and nephews. He taught us all how to fish and during those lessons, we all learned the true meaning of life from Tom—that it is more important to give than receive.

He leaves behind his brothers, John Mitchell and his wife, Kristine of Cliffside Park, NJ and Michael Mitchell and his wife, Carmen of Bronx, NY; a sister, LouAnne O’Neill and her husband, Stephen of Westchester County; and several nieces and nephews. His brother, James predeceased him in 2009.

A funeral mass was held on 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Liberty. Monsignor Edward Straub officiated. Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope, NY.
