Clyde Albert Stegner Sr. of Honesdale, PA died Monday, January 10, 2011 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 85.

Born July 7, 1925 in Honesdale, he is the last surviving member of the James G. and Elsie London Stegner family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Augusta M. Hopkins. The couple married May 3, 1947.

Clyde was a welder for Erie Railroad. He retired from Conrail in 1990. In 1942 he survived the flood in Honesdale. While stuck in a tree he was able to reach down and rescue Ray Canfield from drowning. He was a motorcycle enthusiast and was a member of Baer’s Drill Team. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.

Also surviving is son Clyde A. Stegner Jr. and wife Tammy of Beach Lake, PA; daughter Bonnie Walsh of Honesdale; grandchildren Sarah and Joey Walsh and Clyde A. III and Augusta May Stegner; and nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by sisters Alice Wood and Dorothy Stegner; half brothers Jess, Harold, Lloyd, William and Walter Gibbs; and half sisters Nettie Reigler, Ethel Bidwell, Mabel Nestico and Ellen Hiller.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 14 at Hessling Funeral Home, Honesdale, with Rev. Bill Frisk officiating. Interment followed in Indian Orchard Cemetery.
