Sole assessor law to be considered
May 1, 2012 —
At a meeting of the Delaware Town Board on April 18, it was decided to propose a law that would move from the current system of three elected tax assessors to a sole assessor appointed by the board.
The move was recommended by a committee that had been set up to study the issue. As reported by Ed Sykes, a member of the committee and also the town superintendent, the committee both proposed that the town pass the law, and that it be passed as a special law not subject to referendum.
The matter has been put up for referendum several times before, but always voted down.
During the public discussion, some approved of the idea of having a single assessor but objected to having them appointed rather than elected. Others, including board member Harold Roeder, supported the idea of the single appointed assessor, but objected to the idea that the law would not be subject to referendum.
A public hearing on the matter has been scheduled for Monday, May 14 at 7 p.m. at the town hall in Hortonville.
