Winter fun set for Prompton State Park

PROMPTON, PA — The Friends of Prompton State Park will host Winter Trail Days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 12 at the park, located on State Route 170 just north of its intersection with Route 6. Winter Trail Days is a national event that coincides with the grand re-opening of Prompton State Park after sections of it were closed for the last two years.
There will many free activities and demonstrations hosted or sponsored by local businesses including: a snowshoe demo by Northeast Wilderness Experience, cross county skiing demo courtesy of The Lodge at Woodloch, a “fat tire” mountain bike demo by Sickler’s Bike Shop, an ice safety demo by the Pennsylvania Fish Commission, an ice climbing demo by Back Country Summit Guides, a disc golf demo by Pocono Disc Golf Association, a geocaching demo by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and an ice fishing tournament (conditions permitting) sponsored by Seaman’s Marine. There will be ample time for sledding and snow tubing if there is enough snow.
Local food vendors will offer homemade comfort foods for sale at the park. In addition, there will be off-site wine tasting at the nearby Antler Ridge Winery in Steen.
Prompton State Park is a 1,700 acre state park with a 280 acre lake. It has 23 miles of trails, a boat launch, an 18-hole disc golf, a Remote Control “airport” for radio-operated model airplanes, a picnic pavilion, picnic tables and more. With adequate snow cover, people can ski on many of the park trails and open fields, while the park’s hills are ideal for sledding.
