‘Maria Kizito’ at the NACL

November 1, 2012

HIGHLAND LAKE, NY — On Saturday, November 3 at 7 p.m., NACL Theatre presents the play “Maria Kizito,” a joint U.S. and Ugandan production about genocide. The play is about a young nun, Maria Kizito, who along with her Mother Superior, was convicted of complicity in the deaths of 7,000 refugees who sought asylum at their convent. This is one of 17 plays in a series by Erik Ehn focusing on East Africa (Rwanda and Uganda), Central America (Guatemala and El Salvador) and Tulsa, OK (the Race Riot of 1921).

The American/Ugandan ensemble has traveled in Rwanda and Uganda to talk to genocide witnesses and to explore the role of art in peace-building. The cast, directed by Emily Mendelsohn of the U.S. and J.B. Kyabaggu of Uganda, will perform at NACL before moving to La MaMa in New York City.

Tickets are $15 to $25, or pay what you can. NACL is located at 110 Highland Lake Rd. For reservations, call 845/557-0694 or email nacl@nacl.org.
