COCHECTON, NY — The Sullivan County Board of Elections (BOE) has re-certified the vote in the race for a council seat in the Town of Cochecton between Dr. Paul Salzberg and Ed Grund. The final tally was 325 votes for Grund and 332 for Salzburg.

The votes of some second-home owners who own summer co-ops in the town were initially not counted as part of the total because Supreme Court Judge Stephan Schick ruled that those summer residents did not qualify as residents for voting purposes.

But in May, the Appellate Court overturned that decision and said the co-op owners did have the right to vote in the town, and the fact that their homes were closed down in the winter did not cancel their right to choose to vote in the town rather than their other residences. Once those votes were added to the count, Salzberg was the winner.

Anne Prusinsky, a commissioner of the BOE, said it would be up to the town board to swear Salzberg into the office.
