Pike County primary race for DA

MILFORD, PA — The primary race between incumbent Pike County District Attorney Ray Tonkin and challenger Kelly Gaughan is now over (see www.riverreporter.com for vote totals.)

The race was marked by record spending by both candidates. According to the most recent campaign finance records, Gaughan spent more than $142,000 to reach the 15,000 registered Republicans in the county, while Tonkin spent more than $60,000. Last time Tonkin ran he spent only $1,200 for the primary race, and there was not a challenger.

The race had generated more interest than usual because the winner will likely hold the office when the fate of Eric Frein is determined.

Frein is the accused gunman who is charged with shooting and killing a Pennsylvania State Police Trooper and seriously wounding another, starting a seven-week manhunt in October 2014. Tonkin had used Frein’s image in some of his campaign materials prompting criticism from Frein’s attorneys.

The winner of the Republican primary is likely to become the next district attorney.
