FALLSBURG, NY — One inmate died and three officers were injured on April 13 at the Sullivan County Correctional Facility, a state prison. The incident has been confirmed by the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), but the details have not been released. Officials will say only that the matter is being investigated.

The incident comes at a time when a corrections officers union, The New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) says there is an “alarming increase in violence in prisons across the state, with inmate-on-staff assaults on track this year to be up 50% since 2010.”

A press release from NYSCOPBA says, “According to DOCCS, in prisons across the state, the following incident categories are on pace to reach five-year highs: inmate-on-staff assaults, contraband, and parolee staff assaults. Inmate-on-inmate assaults and inmate suicide attempts are also up.”
