Liberty teen arrested for stabbing

LIBERTY, NY — A 16-year-old girl who attends Liberty High School was arrested on June 6 for allegedly wielding a knife that wounded two of her fellow students.

Liberty police say that at about 8 a.m. an altercation broke out between Steffie Burger and another girl at the school, and the other girl suffered puncture wounds to her leg. Burger allegedly cut another student, a 17-year-old male, on the arm and face as he attempted to intervene and break up the fight.

The school resource officer, Dan Brust, was alerted to the stabbing in the hallway by staff. He responded to the location and immediately took Burger into custody. Additional Liberty police officers showed up and with staff administered aid to the victims.

The injuries were not life threatening; both students were transported to Catskill Regional Medical Center, treated and released.

The investigation reportedly revealed that Burger had caused the injuries to both students with a folding pocket knife.

Burger was charged with various accounts of felony assault, criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest, which are misdemeanors.

Burger was arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court and remanded to Sullivan County Jail without bail to reappear in Town of Liberty Court on Thursday June 12.
