Liberty students join national arts program

A group of Liberty art students on December 12 became the first-ever students from Liberty High School to join the National Art Honor Society (NAHS). The students were inducted in a ceremony in the gallery space owned by Green Door Magazine on Main Street in Liberty.

Liberty Art Department Chairperson Kathy Lambert, who established the Liberty chapter, told those in attendance, “We seek through our involvement in this national organization, which values pride, service, character and responsibility, to acknowledge the artistic achievements or our students by encouraging our students to be critical thinkers, to be able to analyze their work, and to grow in each medium they choose to work in, and to develop a sense of accomplishment in that they’ve done and what they’re capable of.”

The students took a pledge that said, “I will in my life, to the best of my ability, through my talents and art, help to create a more beautiful world for myself, for humankind and for all living things.”

To be eligible for membership in NAHS, students must have an average of 90 or above in an advanced art class, an overall grade-point average of 80 or above and be in good academic standing. A minimum of 30 community service hours in the arts is also required.

Officers of the newly formed organization are Gladys Diaz, president; Brittany Almodoval, vice president; Alyssa Bossert Piatek, treasurer; and Katarina Manzi, secretary. Inductees include Paula Doty, David Cherapanov, Joey Maltese, Melissa Symanski and Sierra Thomas.

After the ceremony, which featureed remarks by Ellie Ohiso, publisher of Green Door Magazine, the students each discussed some of their works, which were on display in the gallery.
