Three members of the Village of Bloomingburg planning board voted “no” to the construction of a proposed school for girls that has been proposed in connection with a 396-unit development, which has sparked widespread protests in the community.

Though the developer has not specified that it will be a Hasidic development and school, the floor plans of the units reportedly include six bedrooms and two kitchens per home, which would accommodate the large families and dietary regimens associated with Hasidic families.

Planning board member Andy Finnema said that the Pine Bush School District is large enough to accommodate any students whose parents might purchase a unit in the development, which is under construction.

One member of the planning board, chairman Russ Wood, voted in favor of the project. A representative of the developer, Shalom Lamm, said the planning board rejection is setting the village up for a lawsuit because the school is allowed in the zoning district in question.
