Wayne grant would promote tourism

Looking to spur its tourism industry, the Wayne County Commissioners on November 7 announced the county’s 2014 tourism marketing grant program.

The grant, through the Wayne County Tourism promotion Advisory Board, would reflect the board’s concentrated effort on creating partnership marketing opportunities that would make maximum use of grant dollars. They are looking for partnerships that would prompt overnight tourism stays in the county, the idea being that more people will stay longer if given reasons to stay.

Commissioner Wendell Kay said $2,000 grants are available from a $20,000 grant pool, but “larger grants will be considered if networking is involved.”

The grant program would be available to groups holding events, or those seeking a cooperative effort with camping or lodging businesses in the county.

Grant applications can be picked up at the commissioners’ office in Honesdale or downloaded from the features menu at www.co.wayne.pa.us. Applications should be returned to the chief clerk, Vicky Botjer, by December 20, and awards are to be announced in February.

The commissioners also approved a resolution to highlight Veterans’ Affairs Director Tom McDonnell’s efforts to get Wayne military veterans to record their discharge papers. McDonnell said the paperwork is necessary to validate eligibility for veterans’ preferences in hiring, tax exemptions and other programs. “Discharges were always recorded in past, but stopped when ID theft became a problem.

Newly recorded discharge certificates will not be public information.
