Cornell Cooperative kicks off centennial; New scholarship for agricultural students announced

Posted

Staff and supporters of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County (CCE) gathered at the facility’s building in Liberty on July 12 to kick off the celebration of 100 years of service to the agricultural and wider community in the county.

There were presentations, speeches and exhibits detailing the history of the organization, which is well known for its work in agriculture, nature, 4-H youth development and family and consumer science.

One of the people on hand was Professor Fred Bach, who was there to help announce a new scholarship that was created in the honor of Earle Wilde, who was an extension agent from 1956 until about 1986 and who was also Bach’s uncle.

Bach told The River Reporter, “The scholarship is going to be for a graduating senior in Sullivan County who’s going to continue a career in agriculture at either the State University of New York at Morrisville or Cobleskill; but they need to be continuing in an agricultural-related program.”

Karen VanHouten Minogue, the executive director of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan, said her organization “helps people establish permanent charitable endowments that forever provide a stream of income for a charitable cause.”

She said the Earle Wilde fund was established with $50,000. Then an anonymous donor heard about the fund and agreed to match it. She said, “So, there will be $100,000 at a minimum that will begin to provide scholarships as early as the spring of 2014.”

The scholarships will be awarded by CCE.

The organization has a number of special events planned through its centennial year including a Chicken BBQ & Barn Dance this fall, and a Taste of Sullivan County NYC Event in the summer of 2014.
