HAWLEY, PA — Over four inches of rain fell on Hawley on June 30, flooding many roads and causing the closure of all roads into and out of the borough for a few hours as a state of emergency was declared.

Two to three feet of water covered some of the roads during the storm, but by 9 p.m. much of the flooding had subsided.

The storm left quite a bit of damage in its wake, with parts of some roads being washed away and a sinkhole opened at a home in Settlers Village.

Because of the heavy rains, the Lackawaxen River jumped from a level of about two feet to 10 feet on June 29. Also, water levels on the Upper Delaware River are some five to six feet higher than normal for this time of year, and personal floatation devices are required for anyone on the river.

As of July 1, the following roads were closed: PA 4007 Equinunk Creek Road in Buckingham Township to intersection with Pine Mill Road; PA 0371 was closed from intersection of Belmont Pike in Mt. Pleasant Township to Pine Mill Rd. in Lebanon Township; PA 4017 Tanners’ Falls/Egypt Rd. from Fives Road in Mt. Pleasant Township to Bethany Street; PA 4009 Dug Road from PA191 in Dyberry Township to Ash Street.
