Locally shot movie screened in Liberty

According to the International Movie Database (www.imdb.com), the story line of the feature film “Contest” is: “A bullied high school student is suddenly befriended by his chief tormentor and together they face challenges that will change their lives forever.” One of the challenges they face is that they must win a cooking contest.

Local youth Blake Nichols won a role as one of the bullies in the film, and his mother, Francine, was involved in presenting a screening of the movie at Liberty High School on June 7. Francine said the screening was a gift to the community from the producers and director. She said the film was shot in Liberty High School, Fallsburg High School and Sullivan County Community College as well as various homes in the area. She said it was a real Sullivan County project.

Roberta Byron-Lockwood, president and CEO of the Sullivan County Visitors Association, told lawmakers about the screening at a meeting at the government center on June 6, and listed some of the other films made in the county recently.

She said a production company is in the process of performing site selection in the county for a pilot for HBO. She said the creators of the show “Lost” were seeking to make a series called “The Leftovers.”

She said, “Obviously we’re not a movie Mecca, but we’ve had some good success stories in the past few years. The film ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ was all done here. ‘Knuckle Jack’ shot a little bit in our office, but primarily they stayed in the Parksville area.”

There was also the movie “Jamie Marks Is Dead,” which was shot in the early spring at the abandoned Apollo Plaza and at Monticello High School.
