HONESDALE, PA — Matthew Holmes, 38, of Honesdale has been charged with accidentally shooting his daughter in the face. According to the Wayne County District Attorney and Honesdale Borough Police Department, on May 25, Holmes was visiting friends on 11th Street with his 15-year-old daughter.

According to an Affidavit of Probable Cause filed by Detective Sean LeStrange, Holmes was seated at a kitchen table when he removed his 9mm semi-automatic handgun from his holster and removed a live round from the chamber of the weapon and then the magazine.

Believing that the weapon was empty, he placed it on the kitchen table. While he was still handling the weapon, it went off and struck his daughter in the face. Another guest at the residence called 911, and the girl was flown to the Geisinger Community Medical Hospital Trauma Unit in Scranton. It was reported that the minor was in stable condition.

Holmes was arrested and charged with Reckless Endangerment. He was arraigned before Magistrate District Judge Bonnie Carney. Carney set bail at $7,500, and Holmes was incarcerated at the Wayne County Correctional Facility pending his next court appearance. Wayne County District Attorney Janine Edwards stated that this incident was a clear example of negligence with firearms but that she was thankful that Holmes’ daughter was in stable condition.
