MOUNT PLEASANT TOWNSHIP, PA — A red fox tested positive for rabies after it attacked three family pets and reportedly tried to enter the family home. Rabies is a fatal disease that threatens the lives of humans and animals and has been spreading across Pennsylvania for more than a decade, according to Marlene Metzger, PA humane officer, at the Dessin Animal Shelter.

Unvaccinated dogs and cats are a threat in that they may spread disease to humans. Vaccinations for dogs and cats protect the pets, their owners and the public against rabies, and since 1987 these vaccinations have been required by law; fines can range as high as $300.

Officials advise pet owners to check their pet’s vaccination status. There are a number of low cost rabies clinics occurring during the month of May in Wayne County. Dates and locations can be obtained at www.DessinShelter.com.
