May is Water Safety Month

UPPER DELAWARE RIVER — Marking May as Water Safety Month, the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River has launched its 2013 Water Safety Campaign. Last summer’s successful campaign saw zero drownings in the National Park.

This year, the National Park Service (NPS) has revamped its “Wear It” logo to target not only boaters, but all river users as well, with a goal of increasing life jacket wearing rates. NPS also will continue its U.S. Coast Guard Life Jacket Observation Study and plans to expand it if a grant is forthcoming.

Individuals and businesses that received yard signs last year, promoting the wearing of life jackets, are urged to get their signs out of winter storage and post them once again for this spring and summer recreation season.

Finally, NPS has released a public service announcement, which highlights the dangers of swimming in open water: “Unlike a swimming pool, these areas often have sudden drop-offs, deep holes, and swift currents. Most drowning occurs while swimming or wading. Do not overestimate your swimming abilities and wear a life jacket whenever you are in or on the water.” Visit www.nps.gov/upde for more information.
