LAKE WALLENPAUPAK, PA — A body was recovered when it floated to the surface of Lake Wallenpaupak on April 22. It was identified by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission as Jeffrey Carl Kochis, 33, from Jefferson Township in Lackawanna County.

The body was discovered on the Pike County side of the lake in the area of the Boat House Restaurant.

Kochis went missing two days earlier when his empty fishing boat was discovered on the lake near Shuman’s Point. Rescue crews and dive teams were called to the scene and searched the area for 13 hours on April 21, but found nothing at the time.

Fishing gear and tackle were found in the boat and it appeared that Kochis was fishing alone at the time of his disappearance. Fishermen alerted authorities to the empty boat, but no witnesses saw Kochis before he disappeared making the search difficult for rescuers.
