Berlin welcomes payments

The Berlin Township Board of Supervisors was notified at the March 18 meeting that it will receive $106,837 for its liquid fuels tax fund payment. The payment from the PA Department of Transportation will be made April 1.

“It’s slightly more than we got last year,” said board chairman Paul Henry.

Under Pennsylvania law, the payment is based on the total miles of locally owned roads and streets in a municipality, plus the most recent census figures. Money from the liquid fuels can cover a range of projects to support a municipality’s construction, reconstruction, maintenance and repair of public roads or streets.

The supervisors received more good news in a letter from Knollwood Energy LCC of Chester, NJ. The letter said the township will receive $5,113 for Solar Renewable Energy Credit (SREC), which represents the clean energy generated from the solar panel system at the Berlin Township Community Center. Each time the system generates 1000 kWh of electricity, the township earns an SREC. In 2012, the township had 18 SRECs.

“We consider ourselves very ‘green,’” Henry said.

The board also accepted the resignation of Craig Olver from the township planning commission, effective May 1. “I have enjoyed my 20-plus years on the planning commission,” Olver stated in a letter. “The members of the committee and township supervisors were great to work with; they have a strong commitment for the betterment of the township. The township supervisors have been very supportive of the township planning commission to do what is best long-term for our township.”

The supervisors voted to replace Olver with Charles Bayly.
