In a rare meeting of three Liberty boards—the town board, the planning board and the zoning board—members are expected to discuss rolling back zoning changes. The zoning review committee spent several years working on the zoning changes that were adopted by the town board in 2011.

One of the biggest changes was the expansion of residential zones, which included areas in which summer camps are located. The residential designation meant that several summer camps which were previously permitted uses then became nonconforming uses, making it theoretically more difficult for the camps to expand.

As a practical matter, however, the zoning designation makes little difference because the planning board almost never denies a permit to a nonconforming use that wishes to expand.

In any case, Town of Liberty Supervisor Charlie Barbuti has received complaints from summer camp owners about the changes and now wants town officials to consider changing the zoning back to the way it used to be. Barbuti has invited camp owners to two meetings of the zoning review committee, which is considering further changes to the zoning codes. The meeting will be held on March 21 at 7 p.m. at town hall.
