Developer Lamm settles discrimintation suit with Mamakating; press release from supervisor

The following is a press release from William E. Herrmann supervisor of the Town of Mamakating released on October 21.

The plaintiffs, and developer Shalom Lamm, have settled this lawsuit with the Town of Mamakating’s insurance carrier, for a fraction of what they paid their lawyers to bring the suit. Shalom Lamm settled now to cut his losses because he knew the case was meritless.

The insurance carrier exercised their right to settle this case despite the Town’s objections. The Town vehemently denies any wrongdoing and the settlement with the plaintiff states that there was no wrongdoing by the Town. All along, the Town has only sought to insure that the laws were followed and applied equally. There was no award of damages. No taxpayer money was paid.

This disgraceful, baseless lawsuit sought to intimidate and distract the Town Board’s attention from delivering government services to the community and providing the leadership they were elected for. This lawsuit was conceived by Lamm and carried out by exploiting a group of people to deflect from his attempts to develop land without proper approvals. It was a shameful attempt to use the First Amendment as a sword against the good people of Mamakating and debase the Amendment’s intent to be a shield against discrimination. This attempt to defame an entire community was, among many other things, a public relations stunt.

Information he tried to keep secret along with all this evidence is now in the hands of the FBI. The Town will continue to cooperate with the Federal authorities in their investigation that began over two years ago.

The Town of Mamakating will continue to ensure that the laws are followed and that the public safety of all Town residents is assured.
