Gordon's reaction to Monticello United

Monticello Mayor Gordon Jenkins expressed disappointment that the Democratic Committee in the Town of Thompson crossed party lines to endorse Republican Jill Weyer without interviewing three candidates who are Democrats and who wished to run on the party’s ticket. They are Rochelle Massey, who is Jenkins girlfriend and who was appointed to a trustee seat last summer; Aubrey Gittleman; and Buddy Alan.

At least one observer of the Monticello political scene said if candidates who are allied with Jenkins run on another line they may win despite United Monticello because Jenkins has a strong connection to many village residents who are “disenfranchised.”

Jenkins said that was true, and added, “I have a sign on my door right now that says, ‘Jim Farrell, we need jobs not jail cells.’” Farrell is the Sullivan County District Attorney. “The agenda in this village is sometimes I think to keep everyone locked up, the poor people locked up.”

As to the charge from Monticello United that the “fiscal integrity” and “economic climate” need to be improved, Jenkins said, “We have no problems. The bills are being paid; we have healthy budget.

He also pointed to 22 projects that are in some stage of development in the village. He said those include the project at the Apollo Plaza, which has been in the works for some time; a proposed 1,000-unit hotel and two restaurants across from the plaza; the Dunbar Towers project on West Broadway, which is nearing completion; and 100 single-family homes proposed for a project on Waverly Avenue.
