Port Jervis dad indicted for murder of son

A 22-year-old Port Jervis man has been indicted in connection with the death of his 13-month-old son. The indictment was issued on October 9 by the Orange County Grand Jury. The incident occurred on September 24 when police say Brett Kanoff used a blanket to smother the child, named Cameron, while he was lying in a crib.

On the morning of the incident, police responded to the home after receiving a 911 call. When police arrived, a relative carried the body out and handed it to EMS workers. Officials later determined that at that point the child had already been dead for three hours.

Kanoff has pleaded not guilty to the charge. Port Jervis Police Chief William Worton called the death “tragic and unthinkable.”
