Terraced river walk envisioned for Narrowsburg

Posted

If the proposed waterfront design goes forward the way the designers have envisioned, it would feature several overlooks, and a terraced walk on the property behind the stores on Main Street—but not entry to the Main Street stores from the back as had previously been envisioned.

Two different versions of the plan were presented to the Town of Tusten Design Committee on June 27, one by the Chazen Companies, the engineering company retained by the town, and another by Milanville, PA/New York City architect Joe Levine, who has been working in close communication with Chazen and the design committee.

Both plans share the idea of terracing, embraced unanimously by the design committee at its previous meeting. Details differed; for instance, Levine’s plan would include a path that goes all the way down to the river’s edge and a boat ramp. Committee members noted that Levine’s plan was more “natural” and “informal,” Chazen’s plan more structured and formal. At the meeting, no decision was made as to which direction was preferred.

Both plans call for enhancements to the overlook area and Tusten Veterans Park, with Levine’s plan featuring obelisks, and a suggestion from Chazen for a possible water feature. Other elaborations included an idea by Chazen for glass railings to leave the view unobstructed.

There will be another meeting of the design committee in the next four to six weeks to further finalize the design of the project, and sometime later a public information meeting will be held.
