Locating the final resting place of a loved one in the Town of Lumberland soon will be easier with the release of the town’s new cemetery brochure. The eight-page, full-color publication is the result of a 20-year labor of love, which town historian Frank Schwarz proposed and brought to fruition with the assistance of designer Christine Smetaniuk and proofreader Sophia Martynec.

Completed with the aid of a $1,200 tag grant awarded by the Upper Delaware Council (UDC), the attractive brochure includes photographs and historic features of each of the town’s seven cemeteries, as well as the 911 street addresses for the cemeteries not located on private land to enable location by GPS.

“It’s a model plan for other Upper Delaware towns to emulate,” said Schwartz, who hopes to ignite interest along the river corridor. “We’re so grateful for the support of the UDC.

Oftentimes, once you start something like this, it can lead to bigger things.”

For Schwarz, the most satisfying outcome so far has been seeing all of the cultural and historical resources of the cemeteries brought into one work that can be viewed and used by many people. “Hopefully, it will help to preserve and beautify cemeteries even farther down the line,” he said. “It was a lot of fun.”

Three thousand copies have been printed and are available at the town hall in Glen Spey, in the Lumberland Museum Room, in the town clerk’s office and in the municipal building. It also will be given to local funeral homes and churches, and a small quantity may be obtained by local businesses for distribution.
