The National Canoe Safety Patrol performed its first river rescue on Saturday, May 26 at Skinners Falls. Erika Poston rescued Danilo Carvajal, 59, a visiting Queens resident, on her first day of service on the patrol.
When Carvajal, who cannot swim well, fell into the river, Poston paddled up in her canoe. He grabbed on to the front of the vessel and she paddled him to safety.Carvajal was not wearing a lifejacket.
The National Park Service is undertaking an intensive campaign to persuade visitors to wear lifejackets on the Delaware River.
