Sullivan population inches down

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Estimates just released from the Census Bureau for the 2011 census indicate a slight loss in population for Sullivan County over the last year.

According to the bureau, Sullivan’s population as of July 1, 2011 was 76,900, 645 fewer than the number on the census base estimate as of April 1, 2010, or a decline of .83%.

Three other counties in New York State—Hamilton, Delaware and Columbia—registered larger declines than Sullivan.

The state as a whole showed growth mainly in its urban counties, especially New York City, and the immediately surrounding suburbs. Experts speculate that increased costs of transportation are dampening growth outside urban centers.
