Callicoon’s Girl Scout Junior Troop #356 is aiming to get its bronze medal, and the idea they’ve come up with to get it is called “Doggie Day in Callicoon.” Presented to the Town of Callicoon Town Board at its latest meeting by troop leader Joanne Rosenberger—with a phalanx of the girls backing her up—the idea is to hold a day for dog owners and their pets in Callicoon Creek Park that combines an opportunity to have fun with education about maintaining a clean park.

In addition to activities like obedience lessons, talks (though not treatment) with a vet, and a visit from the SPCA, there will be sales of homemade dog treats, beds, toys and the like, with proceeds to go toward the erection of a second dog sanitation station at the Peck’s end of Callicoon Creek Park (a first station, also presented by the troop, is already in place at the Lander’s end). Admission will cost a can or package of pet food, to be donated to the SPCA. Goodie bags including pooper-scoopers—the message is clear—will be distributed to participants as they arrive.

The troop obtained the town board’s permission to move ahead, along with that of Callicoon Creek Park, and had already spoken to the Girl Scout Council and the Callicoon Business Association.
