On January 1, Pennsylvania’s e-recycling law will require electronics manufacturers to recycle many consumer electronics in proportion to their market share in the Commonwealth.

Dan Card of Waste Management said devices like computers, printers, laptops and keyboards can’t be accepted at landfills, so the Beach Lake Transfer Station will expand its recycling program beginning December 1 to accept these materials from residents and businesses with fewer than 50 employees without charge.

“Through our transfer station, the material will be packed up and shipped to a processor with an R-2 certification, and that’s what you want to be sure of,” Card said. “That this is going to a safe facility because of the mercury that is in some of these computer parts. That it’s taken apart safely and processed safely so it’s not hurting anyone in the community or in the factory that they’re doing it in.”

Waste Management already provides free single-stream recycling at the Beach Lake Transfer Station as well as accepting appliances like refrigerators, freezers and dehumidifiers. Call 800/222-2028.
