DV to build new elementary school

WESTFALL, PA — After years of discussion in which past boards wavered despite an urgent need for a new elementary school, the current Delaware Valley School District Board voted to build the school at a meeting on November 10.

The 88,000-square-foot building will sit on 40-plus acres a short distance from the present campus, across from the Altec Lansing building on Route 6/209.

In the November 8 election, Taxpayers United lost John Kupillas, limiting the group to only two positions on the board.

The new building will replace the 60-year-old elementary school located on the main campus.

The cost will be approximately $22 million, but the board elected to float a bond for $30 million as part of a three-year capital improvement project, which includes the expansion of the middle and high school wing on the main campus.

At the meeting only one dissenting vote came from Kupillas. Other members of the group—Bob Goldsack and Diane French—were absent.

The construction is expected to begin in the spring with a possible completion by Christmas of 2012.

Board member Sue Casey, who did not seek re-election after serving 14 years on the board, said that by building a new building at a separate site, students would be safer than if the school were built on the current campus while school was in session.
