Monticello Motor club hosts major auto event

Every September when carmakers from around the world are unveiling their new automotive creations, an event called the International Motor Press Association Test Days is held. That’s when hundreds of automotive journalists gather for a chance to take the new models on a test run.

This year, the event took place at the Monticello Motor Club (MMC) on September 21 and 22. According to a press release from the company, there were 500 representatives from the world’s top automakers, suppliers and automotive publications.

At the track, the gleaming new cars were lined up on the meticulously landscaped track, as journalists took turns driving them at speeds that seemed about normal for cars meant to be driven on the nation’s highways.

The deal to host the event at MMC is set to run for a decade. Motor club president Ari Straus said, “The annual event will bring prestige to Monticello through the international media coverage of luxury automakers such as Porsche, Lotus, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, as well as a much needed economic shot in the arm for the area that comes with 500 mid-week visitors staying in nearby hotels and patronizing local businesses.”

Over the past couple of years, MMC has been heavily criticized by several neighbors who complained about excessive noise from the vehicles at the track. But at this event, there was not much noise to be heard, as most cars intended to be sold to the public are built to ride as quietly as possible.
