Veteran honored in Eldred

Posted

Members of the Tusten-Highland VFW Post 6427 joined together on June 11 at the Eldred Senior Center to honor, Paul G. Zimmermann, who was considered a community leader.

While serving on the town council, Zimmermann passed away last December. To commemorate his loyalty to his country and town, his family, friends and fellow veterans at the post dedicated a plaque and a bocce ball court at the center in his honor.

During World War II, as a member of the Navy, Zimmermann was on the USS Intrepid and he was also the commander of the post for 13 years. Zimmermann’s wife of 56 years, Lucille, accepted the plaque and flowers Saturday. Lucille said she is proud of the community and the support the family has received.

Rudolph Testa, a World War II veteran, called Zimmermann a “terrific leader.” Councilman Fred Bosch, who did service in the Army, said Zimmermann was “always willing to do more than his part.”
