The Salvation Army store has moved to a new location – the former Ashley Chevrolet car dealership on Willow Avenue.

The building, which was purchased in May 2010 for $1.25 million, took months to renovate. Ashley was one of several car dealerships in and around Honesdale to close due to the financial downturn.

The Salvation Army wanted to stay in Honesdale since, according to Major Bill Kapschull of the Scranton Center, the borough is a depressed area and there is a need for the kind of services the army provides. “Jobs are hard to come by, and people are in need,” he said.

The old location was rented and in need of considerable repairs, he said.

The new location covers 1,700 square feet compared to the former 1,300 square feet. “We have enough space to hold about 40,000 garments,” said Alan Miller, the store supervisor.

There will be staff at the location on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and every other weekday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. There will be no donation boxes at the site since these become messy when not supervised.
