SCCC has another go at the windmills

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — SUNY Sullivan has introduced a Wind Turbine Technology Program set to begin with the Fall 2011 semester. The two-year associate’s degree program will include hands-on learning with a 2.5 kilowatt wind turbine, as well as turbine simulator and classroom study. As part of the program, students will gain a working knowledge of both residential and industrial wind turbines, and AC and DC electrical systems failures. They will learn to read electrical schematics, and develop their knowledge of power distribution systems.

SUNY Sullivan’s own experience with wind power has been troubled. It lost $2 million on a proposed traditional windmill that was never built, and an experimental vertical axis windmill which was built at the college was recently determined to be ineffective, and will be taken down starting on June 1. Job corps training for locals

MONTICELLO, NY — Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), the Monticello Interfaith Council, Sullivan Renaissance and the Village of Monticello will host a workshop on Saturday, June 4, to provide information on free employment and education training programs available through the Delaware Valley Job Corps (DVJC). The presentation will occur from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Ted Stroebel Neighborhood Center located at 2 Jefferson Street.

“The education, career training and job placement services offered by the Delaware Valley Job Corps can be life changing for young people who take advantage of this essential program,” said Hinchey. “Even though Job Corps has a campus in Callicoon, very few residents of Sullivan County are fully aware of all the advantages the program has to offer. That’s why I am delighted to host this event—to ensure that those who live in the area have the information and assistance they need to successfully apply for and participate in this no-cost program, which has already benefited so many young adults.”

Participants in the program live on campus in Callicoon while receiving training in trade fields including advanced manufacturing, business technologies, carpentry, culinary arts, medical office support and more. Visit delawarevalley.jobcorps.gov or call 845/344-3211.

North Branch church reopens

NORTH BRANCH, NY — Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of North Branch, which was forced to close by the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America due to rising debt and falling membership last year, has been reinstated.

The Synod voted last week to reinstate the church at its assembly following an appeal to the body by the president of the North Branch church, Meta Sorge. Sorge’s parents were the first couple to be wed in the 75-year-old church.

Keesler likely winner in Damascus

DAMASCUS, PA — Dolores Keesler will probably be on the ballot this year as a Democratic candidate for supervisor in Damascus Township. Keesler, who was removed from her seat as the township representative on the Upper Delaware Council, received a combined total of about 97 write-in votes at polling on May 17 in the two polling places.

Township supervisor Joe Canfield, a Republican, received about 35 write-ins on the Democratic ballot. The final write-in totals won’t be released until May 28, after officials have a chance to go over the votes to ensure that they were correctly tallied.

Keesler said she also received about 82 write-in votes on the Republican ballot.
