Deerpark to perform code review

HUGUENOT, NY — Deerpark Town Supervisor Karl A. Brabenec has assigned councilman David M. Hoovler and town attorney William Bavoso to do a comprehensive review of a majority of the town codes within the next few months. The purpose of the review is to identify any local laws and ordinances that have not been updated and recommend changes that would benefit the residents of the community. The review would include all of Deerpark’s local code, except for the zoning code, which will be addressed at a later date.

“A review of our basic codes have not happened in at least 20 years and there are certain laws that seem outdated with today’s society,” said Supervisor Brabenec. “This review will give us an opportunity to make sure these codes are up to date with today’s standards, and also identify ways in which we may be able to further improve the quality of life for our residents.”

Hoovler and Bavoso have started the review and expect to submit a report to the council within the next few months.

Break-in at pot house

GLEN SPEY, NY — On April 9, three suspects were apprehended exiting one of the seven locations raided by the DEA and sheriff’s deputies on March 30 as part of a marijuana seizure.

It has been determined that the trio were not part of the original growing operation, but allegedly took several wrist watches, an electric grow light bulb and a blower motor from the house. Brian Gunther, 28, of Eldred; Wayne Timan, 29, of Yulan; and Joseph Murphy, 44, of Yulan, were charged with Burglary in the Second degree, a class “C” felony, and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and Petit Larceny, both misdemeanors. They were arraigned before Town of Thompson Judge Martin Miller, and were scheduled to appear in court last Tuesday, after press time.

Parts of local area could be in nuclear evacuation zone

REGION — Following the nuclear plant crisis in Japan, some lawmakers and emergency officials in Westchester County are calling for a 50-mile evacuation zone around the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. The southeast corner of Sullivan County and northeast tip of Pike County would fall within that zone.

In Japan, two plants were damaged by a tsunami caused by a major off-shore earthquake; the resulting nuclear disaster was recently raised to level 7 emergency, the highest possible level. Americans living within 50 miles of those plants were told to get out.

The owner of Indian Point, Entergy and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission say that current precautions are adequate; they entail an emergency zone 10 miles in diameter.

Delaware designated ‘Great Water’

TRENTON NJ — The Delaware River has been designated a “Great Water,” joining 18 other waterways nationwide selected for that honor by a national coalition formed to protect waterways of high economic, social and environmental importance.

The America’s Great Waters Coalition, based in Washington, DC, is a coalition formed in 2009 to advocate for the restoration and protection of lakes, bays, rivers and marshes that are rich in natural resources and have a significant impact on their surrounding regions.

Besides the Delaware, eight other Great Waters were named by the coalition on March 22, World Water Day. They are the New York/New Jersey Harbor, Albemarle Pamlico Sound, Colorado River, Galveston Bay, Missouri River, Narragansett Bay, Ohio River and the Rio Grande.

While the Great Waters vary in geographic location and physical characteristics, they are plagued by similar problems such as toxic pollution, altered water flows, habitat loss and destructive invasive species.

Lumberland, Deerpark, get UDC funding for local projects

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Upper Delaware Council (UDC) presented two checks in the amount of $3,090.50 each to the Towns of Lumberland and Deerpark on April 5, representing their shares of a $25,000 Aid to Localities funding program. The Town of Lumberland used its funding to structurally restore the support posts at the Town of Lumberland Pavilion on Proctor Road in Glen Spey. NGS Construction of Eldred replaced 14 columns on concrete slabs at a cost of $5,650.

The Town of Deerpark redesigned and updated its official website, adding information on meetings, upcoming events, contacts, and links; highlighting municipal history and points of interest; and creating an e-mail listserv function. Noel Malsberg of Deepwood Studio in Cuddebackville designed and maintains the site at www.townofdeerpark.org.
