2010 census shows mix of growth, decline for Wayne and Pike

HONESDALE, PA — The 2010 Census data has been released in Pennsylvania, and Wayne County Director of Planning Ed Coar informed the Wayne County Commissioners commissioners of the results.

“The data shows that Wayne County has a population of 52,822, an increase of 5,100 people, a 10.7% increase,” Coar said. The increase in the previous census from 1990 to 2000 was 19.5%.

The census information is calculated by the growth or decline of the number of persons per square mile.

The greatest increase in the state occurred in Chester, Montgomery, Lehigh and Northampton Counties in eastern Pennsylvania, clustered around or near Philadelphia, which experienced its first growth in population since 1950.

Regionally, Pike County, the fastest growing county in our area, experienced increases of between 20% to 39.9% in persons per square mile. Wayne County grew by 7 persons per square mile, a rate slower than the state rate of 9.3 persons per square mile.

A number of Wayne County municipalities lost population. They were Bethany, down 15%; Buckingham, down 20.7%; Damascus, down 3%; Hawley, down 7.1%; Honesdale, down 8.1%; Manchester, down 5.9%; Scott , down 11.4%; Starucca, down 19.9%; and Waymart , down 6.2%.

The Wayne County township with highest increase was Canaan, with a growth of 106.8 percent due in part to the population of the federal prison. Lake and Paupack townships both increased more than 20%.
