HONESDALE, PA — At times, the line stretched out the door, as people awaited their turn to have their hair or beard removed in support of a local fundraiser aimed at battling cancer. The decidedly festive event took place on July 1 at Mick’s Barber Shop in Honesdale and raised more than $6,000 for the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute.

Proprietor Michele Frigoletto was inspired to hold the fundraiser in response to the personal impacts of prostate cancer on two of her family members, father Bill Theobald and father-in-law Tony Frigoletto. Michele’s brothers went to work raising funds at the local schools where they are employed, Wayne Highland and Wallenpaupack. Bill Jr. grew his beard for 39 days in honor of the 39 treatments his father endured. He and his brother Joe raised more than $2,400.

Buzzee Skip Mendler decided to participate in support of his friend, Bill who recently completed treatment for prostate cancer. Mendler urged others to schedule annual exams to aid in early detection. “The sooner it’s detected, the more successful the treatment is,” he said. “It’s an issue that men need to be aware of and this event is lots of fun. There are going to be a lot of shiny heads around here tomorrow.”
