Carol J. Austin, a lifetime area resident, died peacefully at home on January 28, 2018 in Middletown. She was just shy of her 71st birthday.

The daughter of the late Wallace R. and Evelyn Shaw Austin, she was born on February 12, 1947 in Callicoon, NY. Carol was a graduate of Eldred Central High School, and along with her family, she was a member of United Methodist Church in Barryville, NY. She worked for Occupations in Middletown, NY.

Carol is survived by her sister, Sally L. Novak of Middletown, and her brother, Ralph W. Austin and his wife, Suzanne of Kennebunk, ME. She is also survived by her nephews, Ed and Chris Novak, as well as many friends.

Carol’s life-long love of dogs started with her family’s pets when she was growing up. Later she especially enjoyed the dogs owned by her sister and her nephews. Other long-time interests of Carol’s were reading and crossword puzzles. She was seldom without a book to read or puzzles to work on.

Carol was an avid reader of The River Reporter, and by covering the region where she grew up, it provided Carol with a way to keep up on people in the Barryville community long after she moved to Middletown. Her remarkable ability to remember names, where people lived, and what they were doing resulted in Carol being a valued resource for such information for all of the rest of her family.

She was predeceased by her parents, and her brother-in-law, Edward W. Novak Sr.

The family deeply appreciates the loving and professional care Carol received from many during her last months, including the staff at JJB and especially from Sally.

A memorial service took place on February 10 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home in Middletown, NY 10940.

Memorial contributions in Carol’s name can be made to Barryville United Methodist Church (P.O. Box 35, Barryville, NY 12719), ARC of Orange County Foundation (249 Broadway, Newburgh, NY 12550), or the charity of one’s choice.
