ELDRED, NY — In the wake of the shooting of 17 high school students and staff in Parkland, FL, at least three student threats have been investigated in recent days by the New York State Police.

An Eldred student was charged on February 26 with making a terroristic threat.

Superintendent John Morgano sent a message to parents via a Facebook post. He said, “Yesterday, the NY State Police immediately investigated a threat allegedly made by an Eldred high school student. Based on the available evidence, the student was charged by the police. This student will need to be addressed by the legal system as well as school district consequences based on the Code of Conduct.

“I want to impress on everyone that threats made even in an offhand comment will be investigated by the police. Please speak to your child and impress on them that any threatening comment made to do harm to others is a crime. A significant part of my responsibilities is to keep your child as safe as possible. I intend to continue to do just that to the maximum extent of my abilities and resources.

“Eldred depends on our students being aware of their peers. I have asked the students when I met with them last week to say something if they hear or see something, or if they feel something is a potential problem."

On February 27, the New York State Police at Monroe and the Village of Florida Police Department investigated a reported threat of school violence at the S.S. Seward Institute.

A 17-year-old student, Brandon Hallock, was arrested for making a terroristic threat, which is a felony. He was arraigned in the Village of Florida Court and remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $3,000 cash bail.

Also on February 27, New York State Police and the Town of Durham Police Department responded to a reported threat of school violence at the Cairo-Durham High School. It was reported that a ninthgrade student had indicated that some other students may be in danger and that the student was in possession of a bullet.

The school was placed in lockdown and the student was taken into custody outside of the building by police. An investigation into the events resulted in the 15-year-old student being charged as a juvenile delinquent. Had he been an adult, the charge would have been making a terroristic threat. The student was issued a family court appearance ticket and released to his parents.
