Public invited to discuss Sullivan Charter Review recommendations

Monticello, NY – Legislators are hosting two public information meetings this month on the Charter Review Commission’s findings and final report, including the Commission’s recommendation for a County Executive form of government.

The first meeting will be held on Thursday, October 19 at 2:30 p.m. in the Legislative Hearing Room on the second floor of the Government Center in Monticello. The second meeting will be held on Thursday, October 26 at 6 p.m. in the same location. Charter Review Commission members will be available to answer questions.

“I’m interested in talking this over with constituents and gaining direction from them,” explained Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez. “This is also an opportunity for the public to gain insight into proposed changes to the charter, both the County Executive concept and staggered terms for legislators.”

“I feel these members, who’ve worked very hard on a volunteer basis to meet almost every month for over two years, should be given the opportunity to explain their thoughts and rationale to the public,” Legislature Vice Chair Nadia Rajsz remarked. “I also believe County citizens should attend so they can understand what’s being proposed.”

“The more information we can get out there, the better,” said District 9 Legislator Alan Sorensen. “I’m keeping an open mind to the Commission’s recommendations.”
