Officers respond to hunting violations

LIBERTY, NY — In Sullivan County there is a long tradition of New York State Environmental Conservation Police (ECP) Officers teaming up with state troopers for the opening weekend of big game hunting in an action called Green and Grey Patrol, reflecting the color of the two uniforms.

For the 2016 hunting season, four Green-Grey teams responded to 45 complaints, with investigations of incidents that ranged from deer illegally shot from the roadway to on-going baited camp complaints, some of which dated back to the 2012 big-game season.

In all, the officers issued a total of 78 summonses, 18 of which were misdemeanor offenses. Most were for violations of Environmental Conservation Law, but one suspect was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon.

During the four-day detail, which ran from November 19 to 22, the officers investigated and took action on crimes that involved the illegal taking of 12 deer and three bears.

Hunting with the aid of a bait pile continues to be the most common violation; 25 hunters were issued summonses for hunting deer with the aid of pre-established bait, and five were issued summonses for hunting bear with the aid of pre-established bait.

According to a state police press release, “The Green-Grey Patrols were once again instrumental in successful opening weekend saturation patrols. These patrols give our Sullivan County ECP officers the ability to safely and effectively patrol the entire county.  They also help to ensure the safety of hunters, landowners, neighbors and motorists.”
