Just like other animals, we as humans on this earth are exposed to many cycles: the sun on a daily basis, the moon on a monthly basis and the seasons quarterly. Currently it is so clear that we have arrived in the summer cycle, not just because of temperature and long days of daylight, but because of the Upper Delaware’s social calendar.

St. Paul’s Strawberry Festival came around again on July 3, and the annual Narrowsburg Fire Department parade and chicken barbeque was here again on the July 4. The annual fireworks display has returned as well. Just as we take the sunrise for granted, we take these annual events for granted too.

However, the real indication that summer is here is visible as we begin to notice that we don’t recognize many of the shoppers in Pete’s Market, or we notice the increased traffic on our roads. Stop and think about it for a moment. All of these tourists are coming here to Narrowsburg because we have something wonderful that they do not have. They take deep breaths of the clean air. Tourists swim, tube and canoe on the Delaware River, they hike on beautiful trails and drive our rural roads. How many of you can say, “Wow, can’t wait for my vacation to visit the suburbs?” Probably none of us say that, but tourists in Narrowsburg come because they are anxious to get to the country.

So next time you get in your car pretend you are a tourist. Take a look around and see the beautiful trees, notice the river peeking at us in various places while driving Route 97, the Scenic Byway. If you don’t wish to hike a trail, just stand by the river and watch it flow.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that we have so much right here. Enjoy this cycle.
