Tusten Community Garden: fact or fiction

Posted

In going door-to-door campaigning for the recent Tusten Democratic primary, it became apparent that there are many mistruths about the Tusten Community Garden project spreading like Japanese knotweed up and down the Upper Delaware River corridor. Even folks in Livingston Manor all the way over to the shores of the Hudson Valley are telling stories about this project not based in fact, but in fiction.

To clarify, here are the basic facts:

  • The Tusten Community Garden is a community project.
  • The Tusten Community Garden is located at 198 Bridge Street Narrowsburg New York behind the Tusten-Cochecton branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library, which is on public property.
  • The Tusten Community Garden is supported by volunteers and private funding administered by the Tusten Community Garden group through the Tusten Local Development Corporation (TLDC) which is a non-profit 501(c)3-like organization.
  • The Tusten Community Garden has only received private foundation grants awarded only for the water collection system, deer fencing and drip irrigation system. All other support has been supplied by the generosity of our local community.
  • I thank you for taking the time to read the facts about a simple community project that has taken on a rural mythology of its own in the past couple growing seasons.
  • A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all the business owners, volunteers, organizations and citizens who have graciously supported the community garden over the last two years.
