Increased suicide rates

I recently learned at my EMT Refresher course that suicide is now the leading cause of death by injury. As per the American Journal of Public Health, suicides have surpassed car crashes as the nation’s leading cause of injury-related deaths.

This information mentioned above is sobering. The fact of the matter is that what separates me from those who have killed themselves is only the grace of God. I have certainly seen very low times in my life. Wrongfully made accusations, damaged relationships, death of a loved one, loss of a career or just making repeatedly poor choices, etc. can add up, putting you, me, or anyone at risk for hard times and even suicide.

However, there is always hope. Faith is just one source. Going to church, having good friends, family, volunteering in your community, having a pet and a hobby, exercise and nutrition, good sleeping habits, getting counseling, etc. and even taking doctor-prescribed medications if needed. These are all important for being able to handle what life sends our way.

According to Pew Research Center, nearly 40% of 18- to 29-year-old males are unemployed or out of the workforce and more than a third rely on their parents to help make ends meet.

As per an October 3rd CBN.com article, four out of five boys age 16 now regularly access illicit pornographic material online, and more than half of divorces name Internet pornography as a primary reason for the breakup of the marriage. I think too many young men are isolating themselves and looking at pornography, watching TV and playing video games rather than stepping out in faith and up as leaders.

What we need in America is not just jobs and cheap energy. To overcome these high suicide rates, we need real hope through strong families and faith! I highly recommend watching the 2011 Independent film drama “Courageous. Honor Begins at Home.” Thanks, and God bless America.
