I’ve heard that the Sullivan County Visitors Association (SCVA) has been awarded millions of our tax dollars for more than a decade to run tourism for Sullivan County.

Now that the new legislature wants to open up the process and look to see if anyone else has a legitimate proposal to promote tourism in Sullivan County, there seems to be much dissension coming from SCVA members.

SCVA claims that the summer tourism season would be lost if they are not funded. Every time I take a drive and look at all the closed resorts, restaurants and run-down motels, I wonder where the SCVA funding actually goes. I think the taxpayers should be informed.

We need new ideas and new people with new proposals. It seems to happen all the time in this county that the “same old, same old” is what we all continue to support, and it tells a lot about how we came to be in the mess we are in. Electing a new legislature was a good first step for us to begin a new direction and open our minds to the fact that some legitimate people may have genuine and justifiable proposals that necessitate consideration.

Regardless of the outcry about the manner in which this has all come to light, these new ideas of our new legislators deserve our consideration and attention, and nurturing. This is the time to be open and willing to make some changes.
