HILDA MAE COOK

LEDNOIR, NC — Hilda Mae “Tillie” Cook, formerly of Walden, Maybrook and Searsville, NY, died December 11, 2003 at the Shaire Nursing Center in Lenoir, NC after a period of declining health. She was 84.

The daughter of the late Stella and Charles Quick, she was born March 22, 1919 in Kingston, NY. She was married for 49 years to the late Bertram Ellsworth Cook, Sr. who predeceased her in 1985.

She was a 25-year member of the Bradley Hose Ladies Auxiliary of Walden. She was also a lifelong member of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include two of her five sisters, Helena Stickney of Wallkill, NY and Gerri Snowman of Walden, NY; four of her five children, Barbara Sadler and her husband Bud of Lenoir, NC; William and his wife Joanne of Searsville, NY; Donald and his wife Linda of Yulan, NY; and Paul and his wife Marion of New Paltz, NY. She was predeceased in 1981 by her younest son, Bertram “Butch” Cook, Jr. In addition, she is survived by nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by four brothers.

Family, relatives and friends attended a memorial service on June 27 at Millspaugh Funeral Home in Walden, NY. Her ashes were taken to the Riverside Cemetery in Montgomery and laid to rest beside her late husband, Bertram E. Cook, Sr.

Catherine “Kitty” Kraus Downey

HONESDALE, PA — Catherine Kraus Downey of Narrowsburg, NY, a retired NYC Union 32B Office Worker and lifetime resident of the area, died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 93.

The daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth Korn Kraus, she was born November 13, 1910 in Narrowsburg. She was married to Edward Downey who predeceased her in 1976.

Survivors include her bother Edward W Kraus of Narrowsburg and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Monday, July 5, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Narrowsburg. The Rev. Thomas Jones O.F.M. will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg.


RALPH MILLER

SCRANTON, PA — Ralph Miller, of Beach Lake, PA, a retired guard for Farview and a life-long resident of the area, died June 22, 2004 at Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA. He was 79.

The son of the late Henry and Mable Wood Miller, he was born November 4, 1924 in Welcome Lake, PA.

He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps, having served during World War II. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Narrowsburg United Methodist Church, the VFW of Peckville, PA and a former member of the Welcome Lake Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Dorothea, at home; two sons, Gary of Welcome Lake and Stephen of Clarks Summit; one daughter, Susan Miszler and her husband Edward of Hawley; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by six brothers, Delivan, Vincent, Ernest, Enos, Fred and Alfred, and by three sisters, Ethel Beardsly, Bernice Stoesser and Grace Wood.

Friends visited on June 24 and June 25 at Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg, NY.

Funeral services were held on June 25 at the funeral home, with Pastor Peg VanSiclen officiating.

Cremation took place at HG Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg. Interment of the cremated remains will be in Indian Orchard Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

FLORENCE O. WINUM

HAWLEY, PA — Florence O. Schmitt Winum of Honesdale, PA died of natural causes on June 26, 2004 at the home of her daughter, Helen Barr of Hawley. She was 97.

The daughter of the late Mathias E. and Susana Weniger Schmitt, she was born September 12, 1906 on the family farm in Swamp Brook. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Laurence, in 1999.

She worked in a White Mills silk mill before moving to Richmond Hill, Long Island, working as a nanny. There she met her husband and the family returned to Honesdale in 1947 where they resided until the present.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish and St. Mary Magdalen’s Church and its Alter and Rosary Society. She was a former member of the Alert Fire Company; a longtime worker on the Board of Elections; a member of Wayne County Right to Life and Taxpayer Association. Besides being fond of family, she is remembered by many young mothers who taught C.C.D. as the kindly Grandma who watched their children.

Survivors include three daughters, Helen Barr and her husband Frederick of Hawley; Susan Rella and her husband Joseph of Yorktown Heights, NY, and Alice Carver of Lexington, KY; one son, Laurence and his wife Jean of Walden, NY; 22 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Helen Depp and two brothers, Paul and Leo Schmitt.

Friends visited on June 29 at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale.

Funeral services were held at the funeral home on June 30 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Magdalen’s Church. Interment will take place in Parish Cemetery.
